Crowns & Bridges
Dental Crowns & Bridges
Do you have a tooth in need of protection due to trauma or decay? We offer dental crowns and bridges to protect severely compromised teeth, such as those that have undergone root canal therapy, heavy restoration, or a severely broken tooth. Our team will make you feel comfortable and provide you with the best quality service so you know you’re in safe hands.
What Is A Crown?
Our crowns may not sit pretty on your head, however, they do offer protection to weak, compromised or damaged teeth. To restore your oral aesthetics, dental crowns are fixed onto a tooth and only a dentist can remove them once they’re in place. Depending on your circumstances, we may have to first reduce the size of your damaged tooth to place the crown on top and ensure it’s proper fit. Our crowns can be used in dental implant technology, and with the use of our in-house CEREC milling machine, we can have your crowns ready and implemented immediately, all in the same day! Besides strengthening weakened and damaged teeth, a crown can also offer aesthetic properties, improving your overall oral appearance and alignment.
Types Of Dental Crowns
There are a few different types of dental crowns and depending on your needs, each has its own benefits.
Ceramic crowns are used mainly for restoring your front teeth and are quite popular due to their ability to colour blend with your natural teeth. This particular type of crown in made up of a porcelain based material.
Porcelain fused to metal crowns are extremely durable and provide a stronger bond than regular porcelain, as it’s connected to a metal structure.
Gold alloy crowns are a mix of gold, copper, and other metals, and these type of crowns provide a strong bond to the tooth that doesn’t fracture or wear away the natural tooth. Metal-based alloys are made up of metals that are highly resistant to corrosion and make for a very strong crown. The metal-based crown requires the least amount of tooth removal before fitting the crown.
Which Crown Is Right For Me?
Gold and metal alloy crowns are known to be the most durable of all crowns, whereas all-porcelain crowns tend to be less strong and more susceptible to breakage if put under stress. If you habitually grind your teeth or unconsciously grind your teeth at night, all-porcelain crowns would not be recommended for you. In contrast, the porcelain fused to metal offers better durability of the crowns. If you’re unsure about which type of crown is right for you, our team can determine which is best suited to your needs upon an initial consultation.
Dental Bridges
If you’re missing a tooth or several teeth, a dental bridge with the support of crowns may be the best restoration option for you. A dental bridge literally fills the gap or gaps left by missing teeth by cementing crowns to the nearby teeth and filling the gaps with either dental implants or pontics (replacement teeth), that serve as anchors for the bridge. Gaps left by missing teeth can eventually cause the remaining teeth to shift or rotate towards the empty space resulting in a bad bite. The imbalance caused by missing teeth can also lead to gum disease and TMJ disorders.
Types of Bridges
There are three main types of bridges to choose from at Sublime Dental®. We offer traditional bridges, Cantilever bridges, and Maryland bonded bridges. Traditional bridges involve creating a crown for the teeth on either side of the missing tooth or teeth and placing a denture in between. Cantilever bridges are usually used when replacing only one tooth and there are adjacent teeth only on one side of the missing tooth or teeth. Maryland bonded bridges are made of plastic teeth and gums supported by a metal framework with wings on each side of the bridge to bond your existing to the structure.
